Here, the first president of the United States, the first great man in American history, is buried: George Washington. After the War of Independence, as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, he surrendered his military power and returned to his hometown in Vernon. After that, the whole country unanimously elected Washington as the first president in American history. Eight years later, he resigned from the presidency again and returned to his hometown, setting a precedent that the US president could not be re-elected for more than two terms. In 1799, he was buried here.

She waved her handkerchief to incoming ships every day for 44 years. The story of the waving girl spread among sailors and around the world. The namesake statue was created by the famous sculptor Felix de Weldon, who also created the "United States Marine Corps Memorial", to commemorate Florence's immortal spirit.
